Day 2 | Ensenada, Mexico

Humility, Hope, and the People of Ensenada

The last two days in Ensenada have reminded me of something I think many barbers eventually forget.

When most of us first pick up a pair of clippers, we dream about cutting celebrities, athletes, musicians, and influencers. We imagine packed schedules, recognition, success, and financial freedom. We dream about where barbering can take us.

If someone had told me years ago that some of the most meaningful haircuts of my life would take place inside an orphanage in Mexico surrounded by children who have almost nothing, I’m not sure I would have believed them.

Yet here I am.

And I can honestly say these past two days have been some of the most inspiring moments of my career.

Every smile, every conversation, every child excited to see their haircut in the mirror reminded me that barbering has always been about much more than appearance.

A haircut is dignity.

A haircut is confidence.

A haircut is human connection.

For a few moments, someone feels seen.

For a few moments, someone feels important.

For a few moments, someone is reminded that they matter.

As I watched these children interact with our team, I couldn’t help but reflect on one of my favorite scriptures:

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”
— Mark 10:43

The world teaches us to climb higher.

Jesus teaches us to kneel lower.

Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself. It’s thinking of yourself less.

Our team spent time serving at a local orphanage, cutting hair, laughing with the children, hearing their stories, and simply being present. We came prepared to serve, but what I didn’t expect was how much we would receive in return.

A haircut is dignity.
A haircut is confidence.
A haircut is human connection.

Over the last two days, God has reminded me that some of the most important work happens far away from stages, spotlights, and social media. It happens in quiet moments when people simply choose to serve one another.

Another verse that has stayed with me throughout this trip is Proverbs 3:5-6:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Looking back, I can’t believe where this initiative has taken me.

What started as a simple idea has led us across borders, into communities we never imagined serving, and into relationships that will impact us for years to come. God continues to guide our steps in ways that are bigger than our plans and beyond our understanding.

One afternoon, after serving at the orphanage, we spent time exploring the local community and were introduced to what has quickly become my favorite taco stand in Ensenada.

The tacos were incredible.

But once again, it wasn’t really about the food.

It was about the people.

The hospitality.

The kindness.

The pride they take in serving others.

The sense of community that exists here.

Ministry doesn’t only happen inside churches.

Sometimes it happens in a barber chair.
Sometimes it happens around a dinner table.
Sometimes it happens while sharing tacos with someone you’ve just met.

Why This Mission Matters

Serving the less fortunate has a way of changing your perspective.

It strips away distractions.

It reminds you what really matters.

It reminds you how blessed you already are.

When we launched this mission, we set ambitious fundraising goals. To be honest, we didn’t hit the number we originally hoped for.

But standing here today, I realize our goal may have been too high because we were focused on a number instead of an impact.

The $1,125 that was donated made this trip possible.

The $1,125 allowed us to serve children.

The $1,125 allowed us to provide haircuts.

The $1,125 allowed us to encourage families.

The $1,125 allowed us to build relationships and create memories that will last far beyond this week.

To every person who donated, prayed, shared a post, or encouraged us along the way:

You made this happen.

Every child we served.

Every conversation we had.

Every smile we witnessed.

You were part of it.

Thank you.

As we continue our work here, I am more convinced than ever that this mission is bigger than haircuts.

It’s about hope.

It’s about dignity.

It’s about showing people they are seen, valued, and loved.

And for those who would like to continue supporting this work, I invite you to join us as we continue serving the growing Familias y Amigos community and other underserved families throughout Ensenada.

One of the verses that has inspired this mission from the beginning is Matthew 17:20:

“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed… nothing will be impossible for you.”

Faith truly moves mountains.

Over the last two days, we’ve seen that truth come alive.

Not through massive crowds.

Not through fame.

Not through fortune.

But through ordinary people choosing to love and serve others.

As we prepare for another day of ministry tomorrow, my heart is full of gratitude.

Gratitude for this community.

Gratitude for our volunteers.

Gratitude for every supporter who believed in this mission.

And gratitude for a God who continues to guide our steps exactly where they need to go.

Until tomorrow,
